Oxidation State
Charge of an atom or element would have if it existed as an ion in a compound (true even if covalently bonded)
Can be positive, negative, or zero. (+?, -?, 0)

Trends
- O.S. of group 1 elements in their compounds will always be +1
- O.S of group 2 elements in their compounds will always be +2
- Fluorine will have an O.S. of -1 in its compounds (always)
- Hydrogen will have an O.S of +1 in its compounds (usually)
- Oxygen will have an O.S of -2 in its compounds
(usually, but is -1 in peroxides, and -0.5 in superoxides)
Rules
- O.S of element that's not combined with others is 0
- O.S. of a simple ion is the same as its charge
- In a neutral covalent compound, all the O.S add up to 0
- In a polyatomic ion, all the O.S. add up to the charge of the ion

When a substance is oxidised, another substance must be reduced. (and vice versa)
