DEFENISION
-
The belief that after physical death, an essential part of a living being (soul or consciousness) is reborn into a new physical body.
Metempsychosis (Greek), Transmigration of Souls, Samsara (The cosmic wheel of rebirth).
Rejects the Western "straight-line" view of life (Birth ➔ Death ➔ Heaven/Hell) in favor of a cyclical loop.
HOW THE MECHANICS WORK
The physical body is viewed as temporary "clothing." When it wears out, the soul discards it and puts on a new one.
karma = The ultimate law of cosmic cause and effect. Good thoughts/actions ➔ Merit ➔ Rebirth into higher, happier conditions. Bad thoughts/actions ➔ Demerit ➔ Rebirth into lower, difficult, or animal forms.
Reincarnation is not meant to be permanent. The ultimate goal is to purify the soul over lifetimes to break free from the cycle (Moksha in Hinduism, Nirvana in Buddhism).
