Before Emergency
What to prepare?
gather plastic sheeting, duct tape, and scissors to seal windows and doors.
Identify local chemical plants, highways, or railroads nearby that transport hazardous materials.
Sign up for local wireless emergency alerts (WEA) and buy a NOAA weather radio.
During the emergency
Follow instructions from authorities immediately. Do not guess whether it is safer to leave or stay.
Close all windows, outside doors, and vents. Turn off all AC and heating systems to stop outside air from coming in. Seal a room with plastic and duct tape.
Stay upstream, uphill, and upwind of the spill. Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth.
After Emergency
Do not leave your shelter or return to an evacuated area until local officials declare it safe.
If you were exposed, wash thoroughly with soap and water, change your clothes, and contact medical professionals.
Emergency commmunications
Call emergency services immediately if you witness a spill. Provide the location and any placard numbers on the vehicle/container if safe to view.
Set a designated out-of-area contact person that family members can text to report their safety.
Emergency Kit
Water (1 gallon per person per day), non-perishable food, flashlight, and first aid kit.
N95 masks or specialized respirators to filter airborne particles.
