1547 Battle of Pinkie- decisive English victory intended to put pressure on Scotland to accept the marriage Around 15,000 Scottish troops were killed, compared with only around 200 English casualties.

January 1548: Epistle of Exhortation → Somerset appealed directly to the Scots, arguing that England and Scotland could become “two brethren of one island of Great Britain”.
1548: Garrison policy → permanent English garrisons were intended to maintain pressure on Scotland and encourage acceptance of the marriage.

Somerset Foreign Policy Aim- Continue and complete conquering of Scotland which he began as a military commander for Henry VII
Garrisons: after Pinkie, Somerset tried to maintain English control by establishing 25 garrisons, with 14 more planned.
1549: English withdrew from Scotland as the garrison system became too expensive and difficult to maintain.
Overall:
⚔️ Military success, but political/diplomatic failure. Pinkie gave Somerset control temporarily, but he failed to secure the marriage or lasting English influence.
