Malicious software
Virus
A type of malware that attaches it self to a legitimate program or file that spreads when executed. They can corrupt, delete or modify software.
Worm
It is a self-replicating malware that spreads without human interaction and exploits network vunrerabilites. It can cause widespread damage by overloading networks, deleting files or installing backdoors.
Boot sector
A critical part of a storage device that contains code for starting up the operating system. Boot sector viruses infect this area, so they load before the OS to evade detection.
Web script
Small program or code executed in a web browser, often written in java script or VB script. Malicious web scripts are used in attacks like cross-site scripting to steal user data or spread malware.
Macro
Set of automated commands used in applications like microsoft office to preform repetitive task. Macro viruses embed malicious code in documents or spreadsheets which execute when opened.
Rootkit
A collection of software tools, often at the kernel or low-level operating system layer, which can enable admin access. A rootkit virus or cyberattack is one which misuses the rootkit tools to enable remote access for attackers, often by disabling security software.
Trojan
Malware which disguises itself as a legitimate program but secretly preforms malicious actions, such as stealing data, installing other malware or creating backdoors
Browser hijack
A cyberattack that modifies browser settings without user content, redirecting searches, changing home pages or injecting ads to generate revenue or distribute malware.
Polymorphic malware
Malware that constantly changes its code while maintaining its core functionality. This makes it harder for traditional antivirus programs to detect and remove.
Spyware
Covertly collects users data and sends it to attackers for advertising, identity theft or espinoge
