Ozone depletion
Causes
Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS): Chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and halons.
Old refrigerators, air conditioners, aerosol cans, and industrial solvents.
Ultraviolet light breaks down ODS in the stratosphere, releasing chlorine atoms that destroy ozone molecules faster than they form
Impacts
Higher levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation cause increased skin cancers, cataracts, and immune system damage
UV rays reduce crop yields, damage plant DNA, and harm marine ecosystems, especially phytoplankton
Solutions
The Montreal Protocol: Signed in 1987, this global treaty phased out over 99% of ozone-depleting substances.
