CULTURE AND UNIVERSAL FILTERS (CONCEPTS)
Which are the mechanisms through which we develop models that we use in order to interpret reality?
we are talking about culture as something that influences the way we use language
we use the language to represent reality > we perceive objects in different ways because we apply different filters to reality
universal/cultural filters in modelling the world (not objectivity, but inter-subjectivity), producing
FILTERS
DELETION
we can think of things as long as we have words or expressions to express things > without a specific word it is going to be difficult to express that idea
when you don't have two different words to express two different realizations of a same phenomena, therefore you perceive them as the same (we cancel possible alternatives) > ex dark green and light green
one word/concept
> excluding alternatives (assertiveness); ex vegetables are good, meat is bad
no word/concept
> excluding representation; ex spelling, comfort zone, understanding, framing > expressions imported from English that have no translation in Italian
DISTORTION
represented by that mechanisms bu which we have some models that seem to apply in order to interpret reality and when something new comes along, the best way to make sense of that is
ANALOGY
> I distort the interpretation of that thing that is new, so that it fits the model
ex when we see a new color we tend to say "it's kind of blue/pink"
making something fit existing models
(mis)taking something for something different (causality for co-occurence, equality/full equivalence for similarity, evaluation/emotion as observation)
we have FACT 1 and FACT 2 > instead of saying FACT 1 as something isolated from FACT 2, a form of distortion would be = FACT 1 is the cause and FACT 2 is the consequence
ex "Modern life makes me sad" (= modern life is bad) > in reality it is just you having problems with modern life
GENERALIZATION
the process by which you take the feature of that specific item and you take those features as fully representative of the whole cathegory
ex "White people are racist!" > you tend to consider all the white people as racist > you take this attitude as typical of white people
take an item to stand a whole cathegory (ignoring context and idiosyncrasies)
this can create
