IMPOLITENESS STRATEGIES
-
POSITIVE IMPOLITENESS
Damaging the interlocutor's positive face (closeness, friendliness), making the other feel uncomfortable
ignore, exclude, dissociate from the other (disrespect adjancency pairs, maxims)
be disinterested, unsympathetic > ex no backchannels, no feedback)
-
use obscure language > in-group language, understood by the group but not by the target
-
use taboo words, derogatory nominations or nicknames > ex "stupid", "idiot"
NEGATIVE IMPOLITENESS
it is used when you presuppose the negative face of your interlocutor (there is some detachment between me and my interlocutor)
Damaging the adressee's negative face (distance, respect, privacy)
Frighten, threat > this signals that you are dealing with your interlocutor as a person; ex "Listen!", "Now you stop, ok?" (I have lost my temper and I am dealing with you)
Condescend, scorn or ridicule > use diminutives, nicknames in distant relationship; ex "Oh poor thing!", "mate"
Invade the other's space > you don't want to impose your curiosity on your interlocutor and you don't want your interlocutor to do it back; ex "Are you married?" (no privacy)
Emphazise the other's indebtedness > make that person feel guilty; ex "As I have already told you..." (It's like to say "how many times do I have to tell you")
Use interruptions > in institutional settings the most appropriate way to show respect to the other is to let the other person finish

WITHHOLD POLITENESS
-
if you specifically decide not to reciprocate you do it for a purpose > this is a signal that creates embarassment
