VARIABLES
POV OF CAUSATION
Independent Variable
Selected, manipulated and controlled by the experimenter to produce observable changes in the DV (Stimulus variable)
SPECIAL
Moderator Variables
Secondary IV which are selected, manipulated and controlled by the experimenter because they suspect that these variables alter or moderate the relationship between primary IV and DV
Intervening Variables
Exist theoretically and cannot be seen or manipulated by the experimenter, but tends to influence DV (What is it about the IV that produces the predicted outcome?)
-
-
Extraneous Variable
Controlled by the experimenter because it tends to influence DV, but is of no direct interest to the experiment
Situation Relevant EV
Characteristics of the task and environment controlled by the experimenter which tend to influence the DV (task and environmental variables)
-
Subject Relevant EV
Characteristics of the subject controlled by the experimenter which tend to influence the DV (subject variables)
Dependent Variable
Recorded and measured by the experimenter to examine whether manipulation of IV has had an effect on DV (Response variable)
