Industrial Revolution - How do we, as historians, learn from the past to prepare us for the future?
Mathematics
Students will be able to use mathematical areas like Number - Number structure and operations in order to find the percentages, ratios, fractions of clothes or production times between past and present.
This will then be done through the NZ Curriculum knowledge:
- "Identifying, reading, writing, and representing fractions, decimals, and percentages
- Comparing, ordering, and converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages"
Some key pedagogical approaches I will use during the maths part of the lesson will be scaffolding, using "I Do, We Do, and You do" lesson structures as well as modelling in order to showcase how to use the various equations/sequence when finding out the answer.
The key capability for maths will be looking at self-management and self-regulation due to the way in which the students will need to be adapt to new strategies in order to succeed so that academic success can occur.
Social Sciences
Our focus here would be on continuity and change due to the way in which students will be learning about past events and experiences. This will also allow them to understand the past and present to help them imagine possible futures as said in the NZ Curriculum
This will be achieved using the following "Achievement Objectives"
- people make decisions about access to and use of resources
- people remember and record the past in different ways
- people view and use places differently
Some pedagogical approaches that will be used on the social sciences aspect would be through a social inquiry approach where students are able to;
- Reflect on and evaluate the understandings they have developed and the responses that may be required.
Students will be able to study what some of the key inventions were of this time as well as understand how life has changed from then, until now in order to help them imagine what may happen in the future.
Students will be able to create slide shows in groups in order to showcase what life was like during the past, present and future within key target areas like food, school, homes, farming/work etc.
Social sciences will have a focus on the communication key capability through the need for collaboration in group work, as well as being able to use digital tools to showcase learning and actively listen/participate in an interactive task.
Writing
The teaching sequence descriptor I will be focusing on is “Writing Processes - Drafting” where I will focus with the students being able to write multi-paragraph texts to organise information and ideas that best suit the purpose and audience. This text and structure will be focused on narrative pieces
Some key pedagogical approaches that I will use throughout the unit would be culturally sustaining pedagogy - in order to make sure that all students have access to the resources presented to them.
I will also be using scaffolding and modelling as parts of my key pedagogical approaches in writing in order to identify the structure needed to write a narrative essay, as well as in order to model already completed texts to the students so they have examples of what it may look like.
I will focus on using the “Relating to Others” capability in writing due to it focusing on allowing students to understand different perspectives of others, as well as to appreciating those different perspectives.

Health and PE
What are some of the key movement areas that the people during the industrial revolution could have been doing?
Creating a P.E lesson focusing on the movement an age equivalent of a year 7 student would be doing during the industrial revolution.
What was the health like for the people during this time? Compare it to what it is like now? What could it be like in the future?
Ideas like;
- Diet
- Family Relationships
- Child Labour
- Diseases/lack of medical help/medications or hospitals.
Achievement objectives:
- Students will identify risks and their causes and describe safe practices to manage these.
- Students will identify factors that affect personal, physical, social, and emotional growth and develop skills to manage changes.
2 of the 7 key areas of learning according to the NZ curriculum will be:
- food and nutrition
- body care and physical safety
Key pedagogical approaches will include;
- Culturally sustaining pedagogy in order to include all cultures in the learning.
Te Ao Māori

-
Tautōhito urutau - Responsive practice in order to allow the students to ask questions about how we have changed from the past and how that past has shaped us to where we are now.
