What do I already know about challenges faced by elderly individuals in aged care homes, and strategies to assist?
Lonliness
My perception and immediate thoughts when I think about an "aged care resident" is a lonely elderly person who lacks social connection
-
I think a lot of people in aged care homes rarely get outside visitors, this makes their entire world centred around being in the aged care home and being surrounded by carers
Regular visits and conversations with others could be a potential STRATEGY to prevent feeling lonely
I think that aged care residents particularly have little interaction with YOUNG people as their immediate family would already be adults
I think that developing intergeneration connection is very important since both groups can learn from each other

Dementia

-
I wouldn't know how to interact with a person with dementia and this is slightly daunting as it can be seen as a sort of disease which people do not want to be around
-
Disease
I think it is common knowledge that the risk of many chronic diseases increases with age, hence, many people in aged care homes may be suffering from these diseases or be at risk to developing them
Depending on the severity of the disease, this may impact their ability to do daily tasks
-
STRATEGIES to prevent disease: maybe maintaining a healthy lifestyle --> good diet, sleep, exercise
-
-
Boredom
-
-
My current perception is that resident simply sit and walk around the campus, or may even be confined to their room most of the day
-
Living in an aged care home may come with lack of freedom to do what you want, this might lead to having a meaningless existence that isn't characterised by any enjoyment
