Location
Initial segment of digestive tract, situated in the lower 1/3 of the face (below nasal cavity & maxillae)
Anatomical Openings
Anteriorly
Opens via the oral orifice (slits to form oral fissure when closed)
Posteriorly
Communicates with the oropharynx via the isthmus of the fauces (oropharyngeal isthmus)
Topographic Divisions & Communications
3. Lips & Cheeks
Lips (Upper & Lower)
Mobile musculomembranous folds meeting laterally at the labial commissures
Transition zone: Vermilion border (limbus labialis)
Upper Lip
Separated from cheek by nasolabial sulcus; presents central philtrum ending at the tubercle
Lower Lip
Separated from chin by mentolabial sulcus
Cheeks
Contains the buccal fat pad (Bichat's fat pad), facial neurovasculature, and parotid duct
Buccal Mucosa Landmark: Features the parotid papilla (opening of Stensen's duct) located opposite the upper 2nd molar
Muscular wall formed primarily by the buccinator muscle
1. Oral Vestibule
Features superior and inferior vestibular gutters, each containing a median mucosal fold: the labial frenulum
Virtual horseshoe-shaped space bounded posteriorly by alveolodental arches and anteriorly/laterally by lips and cheeks
2. Dental Arches & Gingiva
Lower Dental Arch
Anchored to the mandible
Attachment
Teeth sit within dental alveoli; covered by thick adherent mucosa called the gingiva (gums) attached at the cervical neck
Upper Dental Arch
Anchored to the maxilla
External Boundaries & Anatomical Structures
Oral Vestibule (Outer)
Concave horseshoe space between arches & cheek/lips
Communication Passages Between Vestibule & Cavity Proper :
1/ Interdental spaces (between adjacent teeth)
2/ Retromolar spaces (behind the last molar teeth)

Space medial to the dental arches
