Defining Evolution
Microevolution involves small-scale variations of allele frequencies within a species or population
- the descendant remains in the same taxonomic group as the ancestor
- these changes occur over a few generations and are often directly observable through experimental evidence, such as bacterial resistance to antibiotics
Evolution is defined as the change in the genetic composition of a population during successive generations, which may result in the development of new species.

Macroevolution involves the variation of allele frequencies at or above the level of species over geological time
- This results in the divergence of taxonomic groups, where the descendant is in a different taxonomic group than the ancestor
- Macroevolution is not directly observed but is supported by fossil evidence, such as the transition from reptiles to birds
