8/24 - Intro to Critical Mentoring
What's up in the FYP
How would we characterize 'traditional' mentoring?
"assimilation" as a way to adapt and succeed; success is measured by how well one assimilates (53): "assimilating students into existing values"
"how quickly" they learn the language = better predictor to success
this "quickly" feels CC and how quickly one can learn; if you don't pick up things in the first two blocks, it feels weird to return to it
Block time is feral
everyone is trying to fit in as quick as possible (catching on to whatever everyone else is doing)
feels like a replacement culture/signals loss
"Traditional mentoring begins with the assumption that the school, as the site of student learning and growth, is either value neutral or yields positive impacts" (54).
it's a cop out for the institution if everyone checks the same boxes/"fits" into the institution
flattens out individual experience/definitions; individual trajectories
assumes the institution is coherent/monolithic "the" Cc Culture
hivemind
How would we characterize "critical mentoring"
learning as unique; multiple ways of transitioning (54); learning is a continued process
critical thinking--learning skills/habits of mind/ growth
what's the goal of critical mentoring?
empowering new students; make them realize what they bring is valuable; show them how students can shape the institution
what does this look like in practice?
assess what you like, what you don't; showcasing how students can move through and in the institution
being a little negative can be helpful
