you want to make a good impression with your interlocutor because you want to convey a certain image of yourself
behaviour in general affects your first impression > ex you use the formal way of speaking because you want your interlocutor to understand that you are respecting him
POLITENESS > in pragmatics it refers to the choices that are made in language use, the linguistic expressions that give people space and show a friendly attitude to them (to transmit a specific idea of themselves)
on the base of the linguistic choices, the interactants' concerned with
informativeness, clarity, effectiveness

the speaker's textual persona (ethos) > the face is a kind of a mask that you put on based on the context (something that can change)

POSITIVE FACE

the desire to be liked, appreciated, recognized and included (showing an open and friendly approach towards the participants)
you are going to do something to show your nice disposition to them; as a reaction you expect them to recognize that you are friendly

NEGATIVE FACE
the main point of the negative face is not to be rude but to show a certain distance > this is not always a form of disrespect
distance, detachment, privacy and respect > showing a more detached/formal attitude towards the participants
