      - roles associated with that > ex talking to a teacher (formal language)
  - - - the desire to establish bonds between you and your interlocutor
      - the desire to be liked, appreciated, recognized and included (showing an open and friendly approach towards the participants)
      - you are going to do something to show your nice disposition to them; as a reaction you expect them to recognize that you are friendly
      - LINE/linguistic behaviour showing that
        
        you are someone "likeable", friendly, caring, who can be trusted
        
        you have consideration towards the other
        
        you are interested in/care for them
        
        you will not make fun of them
        
        you will not say anything that can give participants the suspition that you could possibly hurt or embarass them
    - - the main point of the negative face is not to be rude but to show a certain distance > this is not always a form of disrespect
      - distance, detachment, privacy and respect > showing a more detached/formal attitude towards the participants
      - LINE/linguistic behaviour showing that
        
        you deserve/wish to be respected
        
        you don't want to give the impression of being too close to your interlocutor
  - - - you decide to interact
      - you know what face you want to show
      - you agree that is the type of role that you decided to apply when interacting with your interlocutor
    - - PRINCIPLE OF RESPECT
        
        one is expected to maintain a face > you can't switch from aggressive to super friendly
        
        there are situations where you can switch from formal to informal but you have to say that > this is a sign that you know that what you are doing is a form of disrespect
      - PRINCIPLE OF CONSIDERATENESS
        
        one is expected to respect/acknowledge/save the face of the other participants > you can signal it by reflecting the type of face that the interlocutor is showing you
        
        sometimes being too friendly can result a violation of this principle
