Diaphragmatic Surface Relations
Anterior Part
Left side
Xiphoid region & anterior abdominal wall of epigastrium
Right side
Diaphragm & thoracic cage (reaches 4th right intercostal space
Border stays within right costal margin)
Posterior Part
Corresponds (via bare area / area nuda) to Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) and diaphragm
Superior Part
Corresponds (via diaphragm) to right pleura/lung and pericardium
Right Part
Corresponds to right costodiaphragmatic pleural recess
Visceral Surface Relations
Quadrate Lobe
Corresponds to the superior part of the duodenum
Left of Fissure for Round Ligament
Stomach & Esophagus
Caudate Lobe (located posteriorly on the left)
Right of Gallbladder Fossa
Right colic flexure (hepatic flexure)
Duodenum (more medially)
Right kidney
Structural Organization
1. Fibrous Tunic (Glisson's Capsule)
Connective tissue envelope completely covering the liver
Continues at the porta hepatis as the perivascular fibrous capsule, wrapping around branches of the hepatic pedicle
2. Hepatic Parenchyma (Microscopic Unit)
Hepatic Lobule: Polyhedral functional unit of the liver
Hepatocyte Lamellae
Arranged radially around a central vein (centrolobular vein)
Drainage
Central veins unite to form hepatic veins → IVC
Portal Canal (Portal Space / Interlobular Space):
Located at the junction of 3 adjacent lobules
Glissonian Elements (Portal Triad + extras) :
1/ Interlobular artery (from hepatic artery)
2/ Interlobular vein (from portal vein)
3/ Interlobular bile duct
4/ Lymphatic vessels
5/ Unmyelinated nerve fibers
