Overstretched Empire
No infrastructure e.g. rails for communication to provide Japan w/ effective control over its extended empire
Unable to transport materials by land and had to do so by sea which was very difficult. It hindered war effort and disabled time for effective leverages

Poor Planning
Did not realize war @ sea had changed as aircraft carriers were now more important than navy battleships. Destroyed US ships instead of Aircraft carriers which allowed US to recover quickly

Atomic Bomb
Hiroshima 6th Aug: Wiped out 1/3 of Japan's population and destroyed thousands of cities. --> Caused large no. of casualties.

Converted factories like ford for military production and contributed significantly to defeating the Japanese due to vast resources and high industrial capacity Japanese could not keep up w/

Supported Viet Minh who were fighting against Japanese across Asia and sent resistance movements to Britain
Island-Hopping Strategy
Used air attacks and submarines to isolate Japanese-held territories and conquered poorly defended islands. Using them to cut off supplies and hinder sustaining of war effort to other ships
Hindered Japan's access to materials essential in sustaining its war machine e.g. food resources, ammunition. --> Eroded credibility of its defense force and made it more vulnerable to external threats
