1 - KNOW STUDENTS /HOW THEY LEARN
Loud, clear voice
When the classroom has multiple people speaking at once and they take time to settle never speak over any student murmuring and consider 'restarting' the class. I'd get them outside lining up in two lines and setting expectations again about the classroom before they step foot in the classroom. Get their clear agreement to abide by rules multiple times before letting them in, regardless of how long they take.
Excellent that you knew all names well - helps with addressing behaviours properly.
Keep relentlessly addressing student behaviour before trying to teach them - attention is the currency and essential resource from a student before learning anything, if you don't have it they can't be taught
2 - KNOW THE CONTENT /
HOW TO TEACH IT
Would engage the use of a video as an A.V. trigger. Cinematic sounding videos on biology usually capture student attention well. Where writing, on board, is it possible to use symbolism? Really fun engaging warm up activity
Understood the content of separating mixtures well. Wasn't a question that you couldn't deal with
3 - PLAN / IMPLEMENT EFFECTIVE T&L
Lesson clearly planned and sequence of content known well
Would be additionally effective to have engaging points and unusual facts about red blood cells and blood in general i.e. 20trillion red blood cells. Could be an idea to connect students with an appreciation of the body through it's wondrous design
Circulated class well to keep students on track with work. Set clear expectations that if it is not done they will have to complete it during their own time.
4 - CREATE SUPPORTIVE SAFE LEARNING ENVIRO
Safe non judgemental environment established
Constantly checking in with students to see if they are okay and progressing well. Helps to establish trust and support
5 - ASSESS, GIVE FEEDBACK, REPORT ON LEARNING
Early warm up exercise helped with some formative assessment. Consider extra quizzes or activities for Fast Finishers
