CONVERSATION - Coggle Diagram

      - Initiation act > they indicate that you are starting the conversation; without that it is impossible to start a conversation but it would difficult to process
      - Respose act > to respond to the initiation
      - Fillers > you expect a response from your interlocutor and to keep having a conversation
      - Acknowledge function (backchannels) > youcomplete what someone is saying attaching questions (to let them know that you are listening and that you are part of the conversation)
      - Evaluative function > evaluate/judge what they are saying (it helps the conversation going on)
      - Discourse markers (discursive function: marking the boundary between ideas or topic) > to introduce your interlocutor that you are changing topic, in order to be coherent and not come up with something not related
    - - acts combined into sequences semantically related (already an example of conversation)
      - usually performed in a fixed order = IRF
        
        Initiation > different pragmatic function: inform (give information), direct (give orders), elicit (request response), nominate (name responder), check (check progress), prompt (reinforce directives/elicitation)
        
        Response > react (physical)/acknowledge and reply
        
        Follow-up > accept (signal you have received the information), evaluate (evaluate hearer's answer)
      - limitations of IRF MOVE > it reflects the traditional teacher-centered classroom: the teacher can have long turns, the students short turns in response but cannot interrupt
      - limitations of exchange structure theory
        
        there is an asymmetrical power relationship: one has all the initiations and the hearer has the role of providing answers
        
        concept applicable in many contexts, like doctor-patient interactions, quiz shows, interviews...
        
        theory applicable in contexts where questions are task-oriented: there is a specific answer (so not for occasional and everyday conversation)

      - formed by pieces of IRF MOVE that are semantically/thematically connected
