Communicate ideas, emotions and meaning through images.
Encourage creativity, imagination and self-expression.
Forms include fine arts, decorative arts and contemporary arts.
In ECEC, visual arts support identity, communication, confidence and creativity.
š§ Visual Arts in Early Childhood
Children express their identity, culture, feelings and experiences.
Open-ended experiences encourage children to experiment, make choices and solve problems.
š¼ļø 2D Visual Arts
2D artwork has height and width but no physical depth.
Examples: drawing, painting, printmaking, photography and collage.
Mediums include pencil, charcoal, paint, pastels and mixed media.
Different mediums support exploration, sensory learning and creativity.
šļø Artistic Techniques
A medium is the material; a technique is how the material is used.
Drawing: sketching, shading, hatching, stippling and blending.
Painting/mixed media: printing, sponging, resist painting, collage and layering.
Children learn techniques through exploration and experimentation.
š¤ Metalanguage & Elements of Art
Metalanguage is the specialised vocabulary used to discuss and analyse art.
Elements: line, shape, form, colour, value, texture and space.
These elements are the building blocks of visual artworks.
They help children develop visual literacy and communicate meaning (Dinham & Chalk, 2022).
š Principles & Artistic Approaches
Principles organize the elements to make meaningful artworks: contrast, unity, balance, emphasis, variety, movement, pattern/rhythm and proportion.
Approaches include process art, inquiry-based, play-based, Reggio Emilia, nature-based and open-ended art.
Educators should promote creativity, inquiry, agency and meaningful learning (Dinham & Chalk, 2022).
