In ECEC
Open ended artwork combined with scaffolding by educators enables children to build skills on how to create on their own.
Different forms of art support children’s creativity, communication and cultural understanding.
Links to all learning outcomes in the EYLF. Through art children will develop their identity, connect to their world, improve their wellbeing, feel confident, and communicate.
Techniques

They include drawing techniques like sketching, shading, hatching and stippling, painting techniques like sponging, printing and scraping, as well as mixed media techniques like collage.
Mediums

Can be categorised into dry, wet and mixed media.
Offering a variety to children is important. It helps develop creativity, exploration and experimentation with different media, and build sensory awareness as they engage with the different media.
Meta language
Refers to, “specialised vocabulary used to talk about, describe and analyse an art form.”
Using meta language in ECEC is important as it enriches children’s vocabulary enabling them to describe their work beyond, “it’s pretty”. They can describe their use of lines, shapes, colour, patterns and forms.
