PRAGMATIC FEATURES
epistemological relevance (preferred choice) > the accessibility of linguistic options in the system and the process leading to their selection are highly dependent on the specific environmental language the users communicate in
"sit back and relax" is the informal and familiar version of "make yourself comfortable and chill out" used in more formal contexts
interpretive bias (meaning construal) > language functions are to be considered as an interpretive model through which we conceptualize and represent the world, thus inevitably biasing the way we perceive reality
USABILITY FEATURES
displacement (in absentia) > language permits users to point to referents which are far removed in place and time from their immediate situation ("yesterday in Scotland...")
cultural transmissibility (teaching, learning) > unlike animal call systems, language is culturally transmitted because human infants do not have anything like instinctive language, for language is acquired in time from cultural interaction with other speakers, and not from biological genes
