Emergency shower and eye/face-wash station in a chemical laboratory
A laboratory emergency response system for immediate splash exposure - System elements: laboratory users, procedures, emergency equipment, water and drainage infrastructure, and the laboratory environment.
2. Construction
Construct and connect the unit to a reliable potable water supply, temperature-controlled, appropriately sized pipework, isolation valves and drainage.
Build the immediate-use area
Maintain the direct access route from chemical benches and fume cupboards; provide emergency lighting, AS 1319-compliant signage, clear operating space and sufficient room for a colleague or first aider to assist the exposed personnel
Install the selected combined safety shower and eye/face-wash unit in the approved laboratory location, with the shower and eye/face wash capable of being used together where a combination unit is required
Construction records
Retain the installed-equipment details, drawings, water/drainage configuration, supplier manuals and asset-register information for commissioning and future maintenance
4. Operating
Support the exposed worker - a nearby worker assists where needed, identifies the chemical involved and contacts the supervisor or first aider
Coordinate the response - the supervisor arranges first aid, medical assessment, emergency escalation, incident reporting and control of the affected laboratory area
Record exposure events, near misses, blocked access and user concerns for review.
Provide immediate flushing - the exposed worker uses the eye/face wash or safety shower immediately and follows the relevant SDS first aid advice
5. Maintenance
Control defects - tag failed equipment Out of Service, report the defect, arrange repair and provide alternative emergency washing protection before chemical work continues
Complete annual performance testing by competent personnel - record against the current AS 4775 requirements and manufacturer instructions for the installed unit
Update testing, training and procedures when chemical inventory, laboratory layout, equipment information, incidents or standards change
Activate and test equipment at least weekly, or more often where required, and check water flow, access, signage, lighting, drainage, leaks and contamination
1. Concept
System purpose - Provide a combined emergency safety shower and eye/face-wash station that will provide immediate first-aid flushing before further medical assessment and treatment
Position the station in the chemical laboratory so it is readily accessible from chemical-handling work, on the same level and reached by a direct, unobstructed path. Confirm the final location through the chemical risk assessment, relevant SDS first-aid advice and the AS 4775:2026 requirements
Chemical exposure requirement -
Laboratory staff prepare, decant and transfer chemicals. A splash to the eyes, face or body requires immediate flushing
Define the required equipment, location and flushing performance from the chemical SDS, first-aid advice, laboratory layout, user needs and AS 4775 requirements
Laboratory technicians, supervisors, first-aid personnel, WHS advisers and facilities staff identify chemical exposure scenarios, response needs, station location and service requirements before equipment is selected
6. Decommissioning
Install and commission equivalent replacement protection before withdrawing the existing unit if the exposure scenario remains.
Isolate water and associated services, then remove the retired equipment safely.
Close the asset record and communicate the changed emergency-washing arrangement through laboratory plans, procedures and staff notifications.
Retire the unit when its frame corrodes, essential parts become obsolete, or annual assessment identifies non-conformity with safety requirements.

3. Commissioning
Verify hands-free activation and continuous tepid-water delivery for the required 15-minute flushing period.
Confirm the completed installation meets its nominated standard, such as AS 4775
Train and assess laboratory users in activation, flushing technique, emergency contacts and their role in the laboratory emergency plan.
