Perth - Morphology and demographic
Site of Perth - Factors affecting external morphology
Site characteristics refer to the physical features of the landscape which the feature/settlement is built upon
Positive site factors that encourage or promote urban development including - flat or gently undulating land, well drained land, fertile soils and access to water supplies
Negative factors that limit or restrict urban development including steep slopes, poorly drained land, swampy land, rocky soils and lack of water
SWAN COASTAL PLAIN
Sandy, gentle undulating plain ranging in hight from 0-60m asl: mainly stable and well drained, but some minor areas of unstable dunes and poorly drained wetlands
elongated lake systems located in interdunal swales (areas of sunken land) parallel to coast: many wetland areas now reclaimed for urban development
predominantly limestone geology
eastern half flatter and only averages 20-25m asl
majority of Perth urban development is concentrated on this flatter expanse of land, as it is easier to build on
SWAN AND CANNING FLOOD PLAINS
influenced shape of metropolitan area by dividing the area in half and encouraging development along the waterway
sought after residential areas located on the banks of the rivers
DARLING ESCARPMENT
elecation of up to 300 m asl
lateritic soils and granite outcrops unfavourable for urban development
covered with dry sclerophyllous forests which includes national parks which are protected eg. John forest national park
INDIAN OCEAN
restricted growth to west
encouraged built up area to be sited along north-south
