WEEK 4- Arts & Creativity in Early Childhood
Understanding 3D Art
3D art allows children to express ideas through physical forms.
Handling creations develops awareness of space and perspective (Dinham & Chalk, 2022).
Materials and Sustainability
Clay, textiles, natural materials and recycled objects encourage sensory exploration.
Reused resources connect creativity with environmental responsibility (Australian Government Department of Education [AGDE], 2022).
Artistic Processes
Modelling, joining, weaving and constructing help children investigate material possibilities.
Testing and revising designs develops persistence and problem-solving (Dinham & Chalk, 2022).
Process-Focused Pedagogy
Open-ended art experiences allow children to explore their own ideas and create meaningful artworks, rather than copying a predetermined example (McArdle, 2012).
Valuing exploration protects children’s ownership of their artwork (McArdle, 2012).
Children’s Learning
Manipulating, joining and balancing materials strengthens children’s fine-motor coordination and spatial awareness.
Designing and revising their creations develops creativity, persistence and practical problem-solving skills (Dinham & Chalk, 2022).
Collaborative 3D art supports language and social development as children explain ideas, negotiate materials and make shared decisions.
Making independent artistic choices strengthens children’s confidence, agency and identity as capable learners (Australian Government Department of Education [AGDE], 2022).
Sustainable 3D Art and Community
Recycled and natural materials allow children to create art while learning to reduce waste.
Collaborative 3D constructions encourage children to share resources, respect different ideas and make fair decisions.
These experiences support Outcome 2 by helping children contribute to their community and care for the environment.
As an educator, I would provide safe, open-ended materials and ask questions that encourage children to think about reuse and sustainability (AGDE, 2022).
