SOCIAL MEDIA
Social media platforms like Tiktok, instagram, facebook and X (twitter) place their users into a closed social-epistemic bubble that isolates them based on their algorithmic data and social connections. This isolation tends to distort our views and create an online identity whereby one's views are persistently exposed to confirmation bias and any opposing views act to strengthen that bias rather than make individuals reconsider. These platforms are not designed to help one find 'the truth', rather they are designed to capture one's attention. As echo-chambers actively discredit opposing beliefs, this prevents disconfirmation of any false beliefs whilst only providing information confirming a users bias.
Echo-chambers
Algorithms
Algorithms: they actively filter out nuance and are instead, designed to amplify polarizing, emotionally charged content because outrage drives user engagement.
This increase in viewership continuously exposes individual's to targeted marketing strategies by which capitalist enterprises distract and take advantage of individuals

Other human beings are reduced to their political belief, religious views or groups they identify with. Once they are placed into categories and no longer viewed as multi-faceted human beings, they become abstractions.
Dehumanisation
Viewing other humans as abstractions results in a cognitive shift whereby the psychological barrier to cruelty reduces.
