Evidence : The Emerald City appears completely green because the people are forced to wear green spectacles. The city's besuty is based partly on illusion.
Theme : People should not judge things only by appearance
Evidence : Dorothy and her friends
were at first dazzled by the brilliancy of the wonderful City.
LIterary Element : Symbolism (Color Green)
Evidence : The green spectacles represent how perception can be controlled.
Chapter 12
Social Issue : Power and authority being abused
Evidence : The Wicked Witch uses fear and control over others to maintain power. She commanded her wolves, crows and bees to stop Dorothy and her friends. When it failed, she commanded her slaves whom she whipped after they failed as well.
Theme : Courage helps people to overcome oppression.
Evidence : Dorothy and her friends continued their journey to find The Wicked Witch despite knowing the danfer ahead.
Literacy Element : Conflict. (Man vs Man)
Evidence : The struggle between Dorothy's group and the Wicked Witch.
Chapter 13
Social Issue : Loss of freedom
Evidence : The Wicked Witch commanded Winged Monkeys to destroy Tin Woodman who was left alone at rocks before the rescue.
Theme : Friendship and Loyalty give strength.
Evidence : Dorothy and the Winkies worked together to rescue the Tin Woodman.
Literacy Element : Characterization.
Evidence : The TIn Woodman's past develops his personality and emotions.
Chapter 14
Social Issue : Consequences of using power irresponsibly
Evidence : The WInged Monkeys were too mischievous and caused troubles for the creatures and people around them.
Literacy Element : Symbolism
Evidence : The Golden Cap represents authority and control over the WInged Monkeys.
Theme : Powers should be used responsibly.
Evidence : The Winged Monkeys explained about their past and that they must obey hoever that held the Golden Cap.
Chapter 15
Social Issue : False leadership and manipulation
Evidence : The Wizard faked himself as someone who is powerful but only to be revealed to be an ordinary man who is using tricks.
Theme : True value comes from within, not from status or power.
Evidence : The Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Lion already possess the qualities they desire.
