Impaired fasting glucose
Patho
Insulin resistance develops, causing body tissues to respond less effectively to insulin.
-
Pancreatic beta cells initially produce additional insulin but may eventually be unable to compensate.
-
This causes fasting blood glucose to rise above normal without yet meeting the criteria for diabetes.

-
Historic: Traumatic rib fractures, remote.

SIADH With Hyponatremia
-
Patho
Excess antidiuretic hormone causes the kidneys to retain water. The retained water dilutes the serum sodium, producing dilutional hyponatremia. Hyponatremia can impair neuronal function and contribute to confusion and decreased consciousness.
Nursing management
-
Assess GCS, LOC and orientation.
-
-
-
Delirium
-
Patho
Acute illness or metabolic imbalance disrupts brain function and neurotransmitters, causing sudden, fluctuating changes in attention, awareness, and cognition.
Nursing management
Assess GCS, LOC, orientation and behaviour.

Hypothyroidism
-
Patho
Reduced thyroid-hormone production decreases negative feedback to the pituitary, causing increased TSH. Reduced active T3 slows cellular metabolism, affecting energy, temperature regulation, cognition, heart rate, and bowel motility.
