Capitalism, Social Media, Social Epistemology - Coggle Diagram
Capitalism
- Free Market
- problems arise with things like Profit > people
- Argued - it downgrades the meianing of life for little things like hamburgers
- inclined to ignore the lives of the workers unless in the case of restrictions
- wealth generated through satisfying inessintial needs (wants)
Divides society into 2 - wealthy who control the capital and the laborourers who dont own much and must sell the labour for wage
- laborers produce all of the wealth, yet owns very little
- while the wealthy minority own nearly everything
Late Stage Capitalism
Tehecnofeudialism
- where tech companies have power over people in which the people have little freedom
- Rich billionaires control all the 'land' and people work on those 'lands'/online markets for free as slaves -- if not for free, then as for little money as possible
- people rely on these platforms for buying/selling
- Not necasaaroily related, but its more of a shift from cap -> techno, which can be seen by focusing on renting things rather than profits and a shift away from physical capital to a digital space
- Tokenization is a good example of going from physical capital to the cloud
- This can be further reinforced by the rampant growth of data centers which help enable could capital
-
Feudalism:
Where Kings would give land to lords/nobels, in which those lords would employ slavery, in which the pesants would would pay rent and give crops/food in return of protection
- destruction of ownership: "youll own nothing and be happy"
- your data is worth more than you
Survalience Capitalism
Where companies turn personal data into products for other companies in order for advertisments to be more precise
- Through surveilence and data companies can shape what we feel and want
Tokenization
- Converting physical assets like houses into a digital "stock" that investors can buy and earn dividends from through a digital blockchain
- Will allow hundereds of trillions of dolalrs to be realized from existing assets
- Ownership of a home will no longer exist and homes will now longer be bought and sold in the form of deeds and trusts
- instead physical bulding will be owned by an entitiy that sells the shares/tokens of the building to investors
-
negative - profits and wages ar paid for by the same pool of money(revenue)
for profits to increase, wages must decrease
Globalisation
Spread/flow of G/S across international borders and cultures abroad, globally
-
Social Media
- Online / digital platforms
- Designed to be addictive through personalised algorithms
- You are the product through data collection
- psychological marketing enables personalised ads, in which psychological tricks are made to feel as though you are making a decision, however, you are being influenced and you dont even know it
- A means of data collection
Social Media is the powerhouse that allows companies to harvest digital data in order to better personalize ads
-
-
Land = social media/ digitial landscapes
Lords = tech giants who profit of selling data
Workers = social media users who like comment and share media
-
Social media acts as a tool of expression where people are encouraged to express themselves and display their own personal branding
Individualism
Independant
The idea/moral stance that focuses on the individual person, promoting the individual first then everything else comes second
- promotes autonomy/self reliance and that individuals are able to do what they want freely without interfering with society nor the country/state they reside in
how does focusing on yourself impact others?
Capitalism allows people to be independant, owning homes and businesses etc, both supporting eachother by offering freedom of choice property rights and personal liberty comparably to communism which forces people into a square whose choices are the result of the state's own interests. Community is a threat to big banks/corporations -- less people who move out at 18, less people applying for mortgages/loans, more wealth is created in communites.
- communities look at how policies benefit themselves
-
Liberalims allows everyone to be free and thus be whoever they want to be and practice whatever they want to
Liberalism
Classical Liberalsinm
The idea created by john locke, stating that the state is the biggest threat to individual freedom and that there must be minimal government intervention
-
Modern Liberalsim
Similar to classical, however it is also argued that the private sector and social inequality threaten inividual freedom, often advocating for healthcare, public edu, social welfare programs and govt regulation
Both similar in terms of advocating for freedom, but the difference come in what they are advocating freedom for, Economic(Neo) or everything(classical)
Neo-Liberalism
Freedom on the economic side of things, not necesarily personal freedom
- you can buy/sell whatever you want but you cant say whatever you want
- Advocates for reduced govt intervention in private sector by de regulating things
A politcal and moral philosiphy centered arund individual freedom, equality, consent of the governed, and the protection of civil liberties
Families got "seperated" In other cultures, like asian cultures, you see and are in contact with your extended family more often, in western societes, it is far less. This then creates a new generation that financially starts from scratch when the seperate as they must only rely on themselves, this only deepens wealth inequalities. Winners = big banks(home laons)
People are told:
- staying with your parents = weak
- Living on your own = strong
Hyper Individualism
"You dont owe anyone anything" Extremist way of viewing autonomy, often at the expense of community/ social responsibility:
- you must do everything yourself becuase youre a man... etc = being reluctant to ask people for help because it may feel weak in doing so
- Just becuase you can do something by yourself doesnt mean oyu have to
- This has been pushed by social media
- Causes you to live in a bubble by uprooting yourself from the community/ rest of society
- Humans are just like lions, you always see them in groups -- lions in groups hunt their prey better and take care of eachother -- seeing a lion by itself is rare and that same lion is usually a weaker hunter

When scrolling on platforms you see videos of 'sensational' content like war/famine/destruction etc - but you scroll away pretending like nothing happened because you cannot let negativity affect you -- however this is an example of expanding moral boundaries, in the guise of not letting negative emotions affect you you scroll away and pretend to not care
- coping mechanism and algorithms turn human disaster into another reel to scroll away from - frocing a disconnect from the event taking palce and the feelings
- nobody forces us to change our emotions -- we force ourselves
