How Hip-Hop is used as a political tool
Labels
Many labels have a history of explioting thieir artists all throughout the music indusrty but this is especially relevant in the Hip-Hop industry where they will target up-and-coming rappers from poorer backgrounds to trap in contracts that result in almost all of their earnings being taken by the labels.
Relevant topics
Throughout the lifespan of Hip-Hop, it has been used as a tool to criticize and raise awareness of political concerns. This could either be subliminally through messages and vague descriptions allowing for imagination and the listener to create their own meanings, or explicitly stating their beliefs and ensuing the point is made regardless on whether someone is listening actively.
Censorship
While censorship is often used to make certain songs more appropriate for radio-play, it may reduce the impact of the message the artist was originally trying to portray with their music.
Radio play
Radios exclusively play songs they see to be suitable - could be viewed as contorol or propoganda
Name drops
Music based politics peak when names are stated as the target of a message. This rigidly solidifies the named individual as involvbed with a situation regardless of whether they wish to be or not. When used correctly this can be used as a tool to place a spotlight on those who may need to be called out but can also be exploited to engage unnecessary politics and disputes where they are not needed.
Social-media
Large news and media accounts often post agendas which they believe will generate them money. These agendas are often negative but are often based on overblown, forced and out of context situations leading to unnecessary disputes between artists or institutions. This is a system built on exploitation and misinformation and is largely damaging to the careers and lives of those who are victim to it.
