Mindmap: NBA
PLACE (Stadium site, urban bid-rent, local catchments, and regional identity)
Urban bid-rent theory: Knicks= expensive downtown core in New York (highest land value, more expensive rent). High-end retailers are willing to pay the highest rent to secure highly accessible central locations. Utah Jazz= downtown but cheaper land.
Stadium Sites include Madison Square Garden (Knicks), Chase Center (Golden State Warriors), Ball Arena (Denver Nuggets), Crypto.com Arena (Los Angeles Lakers)
Bid-rent theory: Explains why land in a city's center is the most expensive. As you move further away, land becomes cheaper. Different activities—like businesses, factories, and homes—compete for this land, and the space naturally goes to whichever user can pay the highest price.
Local catchments: fans come from all around the globe. Specifically China and Europe are biggest supporters (international fans) to support the player from their home country, there are also a lot of local fans/ US fans.
Regional Identity: NYC= global media capital, celebrity culture. LA= big city. Utah, Salt Lake City= small market, community focused, underdog identity.
PROCESS (Urbanization, globalization, migration, player transfers, league expansions)
Urbanization: Teams are moving back to downtown cores (Pistons, Warriors), fans can get to games accessibly.
Globalization: NBA has 135 international players from 43 countries. The most globalized league in US sports. INternational fans outnumber US fans.
Migration: Players move across borders to watch games. Fans also follow their home country players to new teams.
-
League expansions: Building new stadiums, NBA wants to create a new team in Seattle and Las Vegas. This would create new fanbases and increase revenue. But it also risks oversaturing the market.
POWER (Financial dominance, media rights, TV broadcasting, global brand protection)
Lakers and Warriors are most valuable franchises (~$10bilion+). They generate massive revenue from ticket sales, merch, sponserships.
NBA signed a $77 billion media rights deal for 2025-2036 – the largest in league history. This gives broadcasters (ESPN, NBC, Amazon) control over how fans watch games.
NBA app has record and videos and livestreams of all games. Allows 200+ countries to join and watch.
Global Brand Protection: The NBA protects its brand through official merchandise an official website and partnership with companies like Alipay. NBA teams have sponsership like Nike...
POSSIBILITY (Urban redevelopment, relocations, digital/virtual fan experiences)
Urban Redevelopment: New stadiums are being built downtown integrated with mixed-use spaces (shops, parks, housing.
Relocation: Teams are moving from suburbs to downtown (Pistons, Warriors),
Digital/ virtual fan experiences: NBA app uses AI for personalized content. Fans who can't attend games in real life can still watch and engage online. NBA games can also be watched for free on YouTube (but not the whole game is accessible).
