Design Ideas for Sustainable & Active Travel App Feature
CO2 Savings Comparison: Show estimated CO2 emissions for each available transport option (car, bus, walk, cycle) directly within the route search results. This allows users to instantly compare the environmental impact of different choices before selecting a route.
Visual Badges: Add visual badges or icons to highlight the most sustainable option in the results list. Providing attention to the eco-friendly choices without requiring users to put in effort to search for them.
Default Eco Tab: Organise the walking and cycling option as a default visible tab alongside driving and public transport, rather than hiding it in secondary menus. This directly addresses the finding that sustainable options are often undiscovered by users.
Weekly Sustainability Summary: Provide users with a weekly summary displaying CO2 saved, kilometres walked or cycled, and money saved through sustainable travel choices. Therefore reinforcing the positive behaviour through reflection and reward.
Step Counter Integration: Integrate a built-in step counter that activates automatically when a walking or cycling route is selected, displaying real-tie step count and estimated calories burned during the journey.
Active Route Suggestions: When a user searchers for a route under 20 minutes by car for example, the app will suggest an alternative walking or cycling route with estimated time and health benefits.
Weather Based Walk Prompts: Send a notification on days with good weather conditions suggesting the user consider walking or cycling part of their journey, increasing the likelihood of active travel uptake.
Return Trip Sustainability Reminder: Based on the finding that users are open to sustainable options on return trips when not time pressured, the app sends a reminder at the end of the day suggesting a more sustainable return journey.
Gamified Streaks: Implement a streak counter that rewards users for consecutive days of choosing active or sustainable transport options, similar to the fitness app Strava's engagement mechanics.
Achievement Badges: Award users digital badges for milestones like "10kg C02 saved" or "50km walked this month" to create a sense of accomplishment and encourage continued engagement.
Social Leaderboard: Create an opt-in leaderboard where users can compare their sustainable travel statistics with friends, leveraging the social motivation indentified in Theme 3 of the research findings.
EV/Hybrid Route Optimisation: For users with hybrid or electric vehicles, provide route options optimised to maximise EV mode usage, addressing the specific need expressed by Participant 2 in the research findings.
Distance vs Time Toggle: Allow users to toggle between "fastest route" and "shortest distance route" options, directly responding to Participant 2's request for distance-based routing to reduce fuel consumption.
Carbon Footprint Goal Setting: Enable users to set a personal weekly or monthly carbon footprint reduction goal, with the app tracking progress and providing encouragement notifications.
Mini Eco Tip Pop Ups: Display brief, non-intrusive tips when a sustainable option is selected, such as "Walking this route saves 0.5kg of CO2 compared to driving"
Community Challenges: Introduce time limited community challenges such as "Walk 5km this week," with collective progress tracking to build a sense of shared purpose around sustainable travel.
Multi-Modal Route Planning: Suggest combined journeys that mix sustainable and conventional transport, such as walking to a bus stop rather than driving the entire route, to ease users into partial sustainable adoption.
Post-Journey Reflection Prompt: After completing a journey, prompt users with a simple question such as "How did that route feel?" to gather ongoing feedback and reinforce awareness of their travel choices.
Visual Eco-Score: Assign each completed journey a simple eco-score (e.g. out of 10) displayed on the user's profile, building long-term awareness of their travel sustainability over time.
Active Travel Reminder Widget: A home screen widget showing the user's daily step count and a gentle prompt encouraging an active trip if their count is low for the day.
