NATURAL LAW (AQUINAS)
AQUINAS
Furhter developed ideas arguing that the teleological goal of man was not to achieve eduamonia - rather the beatific vision highlighting unity with God
Argued in line with the syndresis principle which he argued is the self evident that by nature man wants to do good and avoid evil
Also agreed with Aristotles thought that reason was a key part of human existence that enabled us to behave in a moral manner
To acheive such good aquinas created 5 universal and absolute priciples that he argued have been established by God and inherently align with our purpose
Through CASUISTRY (application of the right reason) we can derive secondary precepts form the primary
// the secondary precepts are nor exceptionless
ORIGIN
A NORMATIVE, DEONTOLOGICAL, ABSOLUTIST theory
Based upon the view that the universe has obtains natural order (determined by God) to achieve a specific telos
This order also relates to humans as we are apart of the Natural World
ARISTOTLE
Rooted in his beleif that the teloeological goal of man was to act morally and enter a state of Eudamonia (flourishing)
Roman Lawyer, CICERO
-
argued that the author of Natural Law is God...
The connection between Natural Law and the divine was later redeveloped by Aquinas
LAWS + PRECEPTS

Natural Law
Primary Precepts : 5 precepts that apply to all humans without considerationad us towards our main telos

Goal is to reach the beatific Vision // unity with God.
Argued that this cannot be acheived on earth but by acting through natural law we can come closer in fellowshiop with God
He also realised that if Biblical teachings could be proved to be based upon reason rather than faith alone - this could defend christianity from the rising threat of the 'Dark Ages'
