Interview with Joerg Schulz
Career
Climate service beginnings
Member states had no trust that EUM could do the climate monitoring SAF
the team was only 1 contractor at the beginning with no "supercomputer" to do the processing
Climate was put in USC because MGMT wanted not to have all science in 1 division (RSP) and because RSP cannot grow too much while the climate division should grow
Climate change service arrived: more resources were needed so the team grew
Reprocessing
Reprocessing was perceived as important from the beginning to do for ECMWF, as they had no budget for it.
difficult because people were used to ground segment and NRT, process 1 orbit of data not 1 year of data in 1 day
it needs money, for computers capable of reprocessing years in little time
try to reduce SAF money and take mandatory program money
Core concepts
relationship with the DG and member states is fundamental
top 3 priorities
beign user-oriented
fundamental is not always improving data but providing continuity!
machine learning now is the future
Key developments: what is missing is reflecting APPLICATIONS (in example uncertainty to have a sunny vacation in july at the maldives, used by the users) in the products, and see in which product this can be seen or extracted or how to be used
infrastructure is needed
Lessons Learnt
processing needs to account external processing
don't wait for people to magically understand the importance of next steps, just go forward and push people and sooner or later people will understand and follow
Tasks
Climate Services Development Plan, Keep contact with the SAF
discussion with Delegate Bodies, i.e. discuss and present where we do the IODC service
machine learning or other initiatives: getting involved in the first steps in that direction
MB reporting very complete and can be used to trace back what was done
No fancy tools to keep track of team and schedule, but he would have much in mind.
Meetings
Not much preparation for meetings, not perfect slides. He thinks about MESSAGES TO CONVEY and how to convince and writes that in his notebook.
If meeting is about money, then more time is spent for preparation and to think of questions that you can get asked to
Conferences: EUM conference is the minimum, then user conferences, CGMS working group, stuff on calibration. Then on top of this anything that is relevant for future applications or to discuss partnerships and applications
Team Management
Important to trust your team and to ensure that there is good team spirit
User Engagement is new in the team, working closely with climate experts
you cannot motivate a person to do something, you can only mitigate demotivation
exposing team members to HL activities
important to use a collaborative style in EUM
it is important to retain machine learning knowledge for climate applications within the division
To the successor: don't be shy, work all the hours that you need to and find your own way to do things
you need to stay curious in order to put together and then answer questions
