ETHICAL EGOISM
ORIGNS
A Normative ethical theory that claims that an action is moral if it is based on the self interest of the agent
It is known to oppose an altruistic approach where it is in the best intrest of an agent to put others before them selves
Julia Driver stated that "altruistic actions are those that are performed for the sake of others - purely for others"
There is a distiction made between Physcological and Ethical egoism
Physoclogical Egoism is the descriptive idea that all human action is motivated by the self intrest of an agent regardelss of how they may feel // wheras ethical egoism suggests how humans should act stating that actions that are motivated by self intrest are morally right
MAX STIRNER
rejects the concept of Ethical Egoism being purely based on material gain (as defined by capitalism) as greed is only one part of the ego.
agreed that actions should be driven by self interest but it is only when we truly understand what the self actually is, that we can be truly free to act accordingly
He aruges agianst the notion that Physcological Egoism prsents because he thinks that we are all slave to some ideologgy or soical contsruct in one way or another (SPOOK)
He argues that each agent and indivitfual is unique meaning in order to develop ones unique nature as an adult they musr at purely out of self interest not infleunced by the intrest of others whcih meay restrict their self development.
Acheiving "ownness" (EIGENEHEIT) - in which a perosn becomes their own master
Futher argues that once a person has acheived eigenheit they can then acheive einzig wherby they appreciate their own uniquness and are truly free to act.
UNION OF EGOISTS
Striner argues that in the midst of us all pursuing our self interests a 'union of egoisits' can still occur whereby each inidvidual cooperates with others out of mutual self interest ; helping one another to acheive their personal goals
However, Ethical Egoism doesnt necessarily mean we should act in a selfish manner.
Rather it argues we should focus on out long term self interests than those which are short term - which may involve doing actions that appear altruistic but ultmatley benefit the agent
