Physical Enquiry:
Are the groynes at Southborne Beach effective?
Groyne Drop
Data Presentation:
Line graph
Easy to identify trends and reach conclusions
Can compare data sets and reach conclusions
Difficult to construct / time consuming
Requires more knowledge to make sense of information
Scale changes the appearance of data, making it more misleading
Data Collection
Measured the distance between the sand and the top of groyne using a metre ruler on both sides at
1m intervals
Quantitative data, strengthening the reliability of our results and making them more objective
Easy to collect so we were able to gather more data and strengthen the reliability of our results
Only measured one groyne - which isn't representative of every groyne on the beach
Our intervals weren't accurate
Analysis + Results
More sand is trapped on the
west side
of the groyne as 7m along groyne, on the west, the gap was 80cm while on the east, it was 100cm
This shows the groyne are effective at stopping long shore drift as there is a smaller gap on the west and therefore, more sand is present so the beach is wider + will protect the beach from
coastal erosion
Conc / Evaluation
YES THE GROYNES ARE EFFECTIVE AT TRAPPING SEDIMENT
Quantitative data to identify trends
Reduced human error by checking with a metre stick as it has a
higher resolution
Didn't use a tape measure to space every metre
Different people took measurements for the same set of data, which caused inconsistent results
Anomalies due to overtopping
Wave Count
Data Collection
Stood at shore
Counted no. waves in 1 minute
Repeated 3 times and calculated a mean
Quick and easy to collect data
Quantitative data allows us to identify trends
Only went 1 day with certain weather - not representative of waves over a longer time frame
Everyone had different ideas on what a wave was, making the results more subjective and less reliable
Data Presentation:
Bar Chart
Easy to identify trends
Can compare data sets
Clear to interpret
Not enough data to show trends accurately
Axis can be manipulated so data looks exaggerated
Conc / Evaluation
Yes, the groynes are effective as waves are
destructive
+ without the groynes, the rate of coastal erosion would be greater
Quantitative data to identify trends
Calculated average to reduce the impact of anomalies, creating more reliable data
Had a demo to discuss what a wave looks like, making results more reliable
Only counted for 3 minutes on 1 day so conditions may differ and provide other results
Analysis + Results
Average waves = 16.5wpm
DESTRUCTIVE
(10-14wpm)
Fieldsketch
Data Collection
Sat at the back of the beach and drew the physical + human features, annotating
prevailing wind
, direction of LSD + management strategies
Data Presentation
Fieldsketch
Quick + easy to draw
Hard to re-draw accurately from memory
Conc/Evaluation
Yes the field sketch showed groynes were effective as there was more sand on the west side
Qualitative data gave us an indepth understanding, allowing us to understand why more sand on the west side, enabling us to unpick quantitative data
Struggled with accuracy
Take photos to back up drawing
Cross-reference sketch with other people's drawings to make sure all features have been covered
Analysis + Results
Greater amount of sand on the west side shown by the beach being further along the groyne on the west side than the east side
Human Enquiry:
Are the services at Christchurch suitable for tourists?
Shop Front Tally
Data Collection
Walked up one side of high street + tallied shop into 4 different categories:
Food, Shopping, Leisure, Other
Repeated for the other side
Quick and easy to collect data
Qualitative Data so we can identify patterns
Only went down high street + no where else, reducing the reliability of our results
Some shops fit into different categories, making data seem more misleading
Data Presentation
Pie Chart
Visual patterns detected
Easy to read + interpret
Does not reveal exact values
Does not show change overtime so we can't identify trends
Analysis + Results
There are a variety of services (18 services) with the second highest category being food outlets (14)
Services are more suited to local people
but
this shows a range of amenities for tourists to use
There were a few
independent stores
which could also attract tourists
Conc/Evaluation
Yes, the services are suitable for tourists as there are lots of amenities for tourists to use such as food outlets and shopping
Range of qualitative and quantitative data used, strengthening the reliability of our results
Only went down high street and nowhere else
tally shops in a wider area to create a sample that's representative of the shops in Christchurch
