Marriage
Marriage rates have decreased. In 2018 there were 155,000 first marriages less than 1/2 in 1972
Morse re- marriages in 2018 1/3 of marriages were remarriages
More people were getting married later
Less likely to get married in a church in 2018 20% of marriages were in churches
Reasons for change
Second marriages have increased because divorce has increased
There is less pressure to marry and more freedom for individuals to choose what relationship they wanted
Age has increased because they are focusing on careers and education for longer
Church wedding have declined due to secularisation and refusal to marry divorced people
Cohabitation
Involves unmarried couple in a relationship and living together
There are 3.5 million cohabitating heterosexual couples in Britain and about 1 in 7 adults are now cohabitating
Reasons for change
Decline in stigma attracted to sex outside marriage 44% said it was ok i 1989 in 2012 it was 65% and now its sitting at 75%
Increased career opportunity's for women meaning they have less need of financial security of marriage
Secularisation: Young people with no religion are more likely to cohabitate than those with religion
Chester: Cohabitation is part of the process of getting married and its the step before getting married
Same Sex marriage
Stone wall: estimate that 5-7% of adult relationships are same sex however impossible to tell if increased because it used to be illegal
Male homosexuality acts were decriminalised in 1967 for consenting adults over 21
Police now treat all couples more equally Eg 2004 civil partnership act which gave legal right in terms of inheritance and the 1025 same sex marriage meaning they can get married
Chosen Family
Weeks: Sees lesbian and gay men as creating families based on the idea of friendship and they offer the same security and stability as heterosexual couples
Einasdottir: Same sex couples don't have same goals of relationships as heterosexual couples they want more flexibility and less monogamy
One person households
Fewer people today are living with couples 1/2 of all one person households are over 65s and have doubled since 1961
Estimated that 30% of adults will be single by 2033
Reasons for change
increased separation and divorce have created more single households especially in men under 65
Decline in the number of marriages meaning more people are single could be due to people wanting to live alone
Some because there are too few partners in their age group eg older widows
Living apart together- in a significant relationship but not married or cohabitating some because they cant afford to or want or keep their home or they believe its too early
