Social Cognitive View of Learning
Social Learning
Learning that occurs as a result of social
interaction
Behavior is learnt by observing others (Modeling)
:
Modeling Effect on Behavior
Response facilitation:
Observer acquires new behavior which is then repeated when reinforced
Response inhibition: Displays previously learnt behavior less frequently when seeing someone else get punished
Response disinhibition:
Displays a previously punished behavior more frequently after seeing someone else do it with no consequence
Conditions Essential for Learning From Models
Attention: Must pay attention to the mode
Retention: Must remember what the model does
Motivation
Motor reproduction: Must be physically capable of reproducing model behavio
r
Reinforcement
Direct:
Teachers should reinforce appropriate behaviors from students
Self-Reinforcement:
Encourage students to control their own reinforcers, not just only wanting to improve due to external rewards
Vicarious:
students observe others getting reinforced for a behavior and replicates this
Self-Efficacy
Effects of Self-Efficacy on Behavior
Choice: More tendency to choose activities which they believe will succeed at
Effort: More effort is put forth when they belive they will succeed
Persistence: More likely to persist at something
Learning/ Achievement increases due to self-efficacy
Teacher should aid in fostering self-efficacy in students
Belief that one is capable of executing certain behaviors/ reaching goals
Self-Regulation
Students set goals for themselves, engage in behaviors that lead to goal
Teachers should:
Use scaffolding to help with fostering self-regulation
Encourage students to engage in self-evaluation
Teach students to reinforce themselves for good behavior
