Petra was an ancient Nabataean capital carved directly into sandstone cliffs in Jordan around the 4th century BCE. Historically, theories focus on its function as a heavily fortified trading hub, its role as a sacred site, and revisionist religious hypotheses about its origin.
Description of the lost city
served as the capital of the Nabataean people for hundreds of years before the Romans annexed the kingdom around A.D. 106. The ancient trade center once housed tens of thousands of people.
the city’s population had long dwindled by 1812 when the Swiss adventurer Johann Burckhardt pretended to be a Muslim pilgrim looking for the tomb of the prophet Aaron and convinced a Bedouin guide to bring him to the city
Search for the missing city
The first European to describe them was the Swiss traveler Johann Ludwig Burckhardt during his travels in 1812
Burckhardt already spoke Arabic fluently, and was on his way to explore the Niger River when he heard stories of a dead city that held the tomb of the Prophet Aaron
He then dressed himself up as a local, and only spoke in Arabic, bringing a goat with him with the intent of sacrificing it in honor of Aaron's Tomb
After one day of exploring, he was convinced that he had found the lost city of Petra.
