Because he married into a higher social class, he is often anxious about his family's reputation, relying on his wife, Sybil, to correct his social missteps.
He views Inspector Goole’s interrogation merely as an economic and reputational threat. When the Inspector leaves, Birling is visibly relieved and mocks his family for taking the inquiry seriously, failing to learn any moral lesson
