NATURE OF GOD - Coggle Diagram
NATURE OF GOD
SUFFER?
TRADITIONALLY
Traditionally Chirstian Theology tuaght that Jesus was Impassible meaning "unable to suffer" and incapable of showcasing any emotion
attribute of impassiblity is closely linked to Gods unchanging nature equally him being omnipotent means he is not subject to anything including suffering
OT & NT
OT reveals a God that does have emotion including love grief anger and "jelousy" - often causing him to repent or change his mind
New Testament reveals a God who has become incarnate in Jesus; Jesus is evidently showcased to feel pain, greif and compassion//
shown by the death of John the Baptist but his compassion compelled him to heal the weak and poor
Jesus is also showacsed to show the emotion of anger
Jurgen Moltmann
Recent events such as the World Wars and the Holocaust lead him to beleive that it is immposible for God to not expereince pain and suffering in response to his creation
Grounds his theology and beleif on Jesus' cry from the cross "my God, my God why hast thou forsaken me"
Moltmann veiws Jesys as the human face of God - so the crucified God is really God
The cry of abandonement actually came from within God
However he argues that God cannot suffer unwillingly or becuase of any deficiency in his being / this would contradict his omnipotent nature // He suffers willingly
God is affected by human suffereing beacuse he loves his creation
Moltmann encourages beleivers toidentify wiht the crucified Christ as it encouraages solidarity with the poor and oppresed //
As the power of the crucifed Christ comes from the agapistic live with which Christ sufers
MALE?
ORIGIN
-
God as Father, Jesus as Son - both male
God is also given the charactersistics of a female
Isiah 66.13 described as a comforting mother
Matthw 23:37 Jesus uses the motherly parable of a Hen guiding her chicks to describe himself
Jesus descirbes God as a male role e.g. The Lords Prayer // Constantly referring to God as His father and himself as the Son of Man // The Holy Spirit is also indrectly described through male pronouns in the greek translation
-
Arguably Clear Patriachy in Scripture which may explain why God is depicted as a male // Puals teachings about woman not being permitted to preach + bible conantly using male pronouns to refer to beleivers
e.g. he who dwells is the secrest place of the most high
Howevever it is clear that God values all equally "there is neither male nor female, jew nor gentile in Christ"

SALLIE MCFAGUE
Argued that all pronouns and the languge used to describe God is metaphorical ; a human attempt to make sense of God and the languiage used actually says very little about Gods true nature.
Translated the trinity through new metaphors as Mother = Father, Freind = Holy Sprirt and Lover = Jesus // argues that these metaphors are more relvant today
