The plot

After being sold to an undertaker, he runs away to London and meets a gang of young pickpockets led by an older man named Fagin.
A kind man named Mr. Brownlow tries to help him, but the gang kidnaps Oliver and forces him to take part in a burglary, where he gets shot.
Eventually, Mr. Brownlow adopts Oliver and gives him a loving home.
Investigations reveal that Oliver actually comes from a noble family, and his evil half-brother—who wanted to steal his inheritance—is arrested along with the gang leaders.

The workhouse: It is run by lower-middle-class people who are cold and do not care about the feelings of the poor.
The criminal world: Poverty forces people to become thieves and murderers who live in terrible, dark slums full of fear.
The middle class: These are respectable people, like Mr. Brownlow, who believe in moral values and human dignity.
