Transport in Humans
Main components of blood
(Blood transports oxygen, nutrients and waste products around the body)
Plasma
A yellowish liquid in blood that mainly contains water and glucose, salts, proteins, amino Acids, fats, vitamins, hormones and excretory products as well as red and white blood cells
Transports:
- blood cells around the body
- nutrients from the small intestines to other parts of the body
- excretory products from organs where they are produced to excretory organs for removal
- hormones from endocrine glands to target organs
Red Blood Cells
Contains haemoglobin which can reversibly bind with oxygen. In lungs: haemoglobin + oxygen --> oxyhaemoglobin. In tissues of low oxygen concentration: Oxyhaemoglobin --> oxygen + haemoglobin.
Has biconcave shape to increase surface area to volume ratio = increases rate of absorption & release of oxygen

Notes (definitions)
Excretory products (eg. urea, carbon dioxide) = metabolic waste products
Phagocytosis: the process by which a white blood cell engulfs and destroys foreign particles such as bacteria
Systole: contraction
- Atrial systole = atriums contracts
- Ventricular systole = Ventricles contract
Diastole: relaxation
- Atrial diastole = atriums relax
- Ventricular diastole = ventricles relax
