Cologne Cathedral (1248 BCE.–1560 BCE.) - Coggle Diagram
Cologne Cathedral (1248 BCE.–1560 BCE.)
Cross like shape
Meant to honor God and Christ
Meant to be "made to please them, as their home", yet the incredible decoration and oppulence contradicts the teachings of the bible to lead a humble life.
Possibly contradicting this teaching due to cathedrals being holy and godly, therefor being exempt from humility and being decorated extravagantly to show the strength and power of god
Tall towers at the intersection of the cross and flanking the front
In Medieval times, the Church was the tallest building in the town and it was illegal to build a taller building, save for city walls etc.
Meant to "reach to the heavens" and "get closer to god"?
Placement of the central pillar, where the two points of the cross meet
Deeper symbolism, near where Jesus' heart would be on the cross
Middle tower is not the tallest though, why is that?
most likely due to structural constraints
Why would they not chose to reinforce the area in order to build the central tower to be the tallest given it is theoretically possible with the equipment and knowledge of the time
Front towers

Gargoyles
Meant for protection
Scary "demonic" like appearance
Why were they built with a demonic appearence?
Would demonic representation theoretically be inviting to evil spirits?
Was the point of this to "attract" demons so that they could be purified by the devine presence of the church?
Pope francis gargoyle at front added in 2018
Other "non-standard" uniquely carved gargoyles are also present around the cathedral as there are 108 gargoyles in total
Stone archways everywhere
Carried over from Roman era?
Carefully stacked on top of eachother, either lining up perfectly or being stacked almost like a pyramid
Archways typically over doorways or the stained glass windows that continue to stack upwards
Stained glass windows are a mixture of random colors and images, this is a modern addition meant to replace a broken window.
Random colors consist of tons of squares of different colors mashed together
Stained glass windows with imagery depict the "Story of Salvation".
Also includes depictions of "The Three Kings"
Light shining through the stained glass was seen as devine and to posess godly beauty, which is why they put it everywhere they could fit it
