Aristotle
❤?
Dante
"I was suddenly sad, Nom Not exactly sad. It felt like someone had punched me," (Saenz
106)
Dante and Aristotle's relationship is slowly evolving throughout the novel. Starting off as new friends, they only grow closer as the chapters go on. This is proven through aristotle beginning to care about another person, Dante, when he normally does not.
oh no 💣
Father
“Every time Dante entered the house, he kissed his mom and dad on the cheek - or they kissed him - as if all that kissing was perfectly normal. I wondered what my father would do if I ever went up to him and kissed him on the cheek” (Saenz 41). Aristotle doesn't know how to act around his father and doesn't feel a deep connection with him. He feels awkward around him and compares his relationship with his father to those of other children in a glimse at 'normalcy'.
"See, I didn't get my dad. I could never guess how he would react to things." (Saenz 33) Aristotle did not develop a close relationship with his father because of his reserved nature following his military engagement. He is unsure about his father's reactions and feels that he is more erratic and disconnected.
🫂
Mother
"This was the first time that I really saw my mother as a person. A person who was so much more than just my mother,"(Saenz 90)
Dante is now more connected to his mother as his mother was revealing more information about herself to Aristotle. Instead of only viewing his mother as a caretaker and someone who nags him, he now sees her as another person who he could connect and create a stronger relationship with.

🚓 lol
Brother
"I want to know about my brother. If I knew more about him, would I hate him?" (Saenz 98) Aristotle barely knows anything about his brother, because he's in jail. He misses him but his family doesn't talk about him because they are ashamed.
"It's not that my sister's didn't care about me. It's just that they mostly treated me more like a son than a brother. I didn't need three mothers. So really, I was alone" (Saenz 83) His sisters aren't really mentioned in the book and they have a large age gap.
