But then I forced myself to do ten more past paper questions every day. Even if I only got one question right, I treated it as a step forward. Slowly, my scores went from the thirties to the fifties, then to the sixties. The rain will stop, and the darkness will pass. The most important thing is that you keep moving forward.”
- - - - Lok, who was sitting at the desk next to him, put down his pen and turned to look at him. “Hey, don’t give up so easily. I only scored in the forties in the last mock too — we’re pretty much the same.”
        
        Ming gave a bitter smile. “You’re still in the mood to joke?”
        
        Ming fell silent for a long while. He looked at the rain outside the window, then back at his messy notes. He took a deep breath and sat up straight. “…Okay, I’ll try.”
        
        From that night on, the two boys studied together until the early hours every day. They asked each other questions, solved problems, and encouraged one another. Whenever they got stuck, they searched for explanation videos online and redid all the questions they had gotten wrong. Although it was still very tough, every small improvement brought a little more light into their hearts.
        
        On the day of the exam, the rain finally stopped. Sunlight shone on the leaves outside the exam hall, sparkling on the raindrops.
        
        After finishing the last paper, Ming and Lok walked out of the exam centre, looked at each other, and suddenly burst into laughter. They didn’t know their results yet, but they both understood clearly — no matter what the outcome was, they had already created their own hope on this journey.
