Holocaust Art
General notes
-
-
-
From the age of Post-Modernism, playing with ironic takes, playing with the constant and endless representation.
Tom Sachs, Prada Death Camp (1998)
-
-
-
By this point the Holocaust has become a brand, about the Holocaust industry.
Zbigniew Libera, Lego Concentration Camp (1996)
Normal Lego pieces aside from a few that were specially made. The pieces are there, you can decide to build a house, or you can chose to build a camp.
-
Commentary on the modernity of the Holocaust. The pieces of modernity were there, humanity can chose to foster society or use them to build death camps.
Libera's intention: Create an 'architecture which influences those whom it shelters, which provides control, subordinates individuals to cognition and modifies them through discipline'. Not necessarily about the Holocaust
Micha Kubail, Hitler's Cabinet (1990)
Big cross which projects films from Germany during the 1920s and 1930s - the projection means it takes the shape of a swastika
-
1920s and 1930s important. Weimar cinema shows a desire for dictatorship, so can see that from the films of the time. Points in that direction.
-
Alan Schechner, It's the Real Thing - Self-Portrait at Buchenwald (1993)
-
-
Pointing to a desire that can only be felt by second-generation Jewish people to insert himself into Buchenwald - in the year of the Holocaust in popular culture
No matter what he does, it is not the real thing.
Zbigniew Libera, Eroica (1998)
Toy soldier set, but it is the victims of the soldiers and not the soldiers themselves.
-
References Nicolas Poussin, The Rape of the Sabine Women (1636-7)
Alan Schechner, Spielberg's List (1998)
Listed all the works by Spielberg up to that point, as if it was Schindler's list
-
-
Zbigniew Libera, Ken's Aunt (1995)
Nothing to do with the Holocaust, but shows how he uses toys as art. Saying something about the ideas of aesthetics.
Krakow
Krakow and Auschwitz - Auschwitz is a major draw. Creates an industry around the dark tourism. Tours which go from the ghettos, to Auschwitz, and then a salt mine which has nothing to do with it.
