THE EDEN BASIN - Coggle Diagram
THE EDEN BASIN
STORM DESMOND
-
-
The ground was already saturated due to rainfall days before // No inflitration could happen decreasing lag time
-
-
NATURAL CHARACTERSISTICS
Rainfall is 3x higher than national average - Largely due to the releif of the area // orographic rainfall is stimulated by high mountains
-
Highest grounds of the basin are made up of impermeable ingenous rock // Infiltation is much slower - Surface Runoff increases
Majority of Basin is made of pearmeable limestone and sandstone // infliration is faster - surface run off decreases - ground water stores are larger
(HUMAN) CHANGES
CONSTRUCTION
Built up, Urban areas have increased (New housing estates have been built // along with future plans to build 10,000 homes around Carslisle)
Surfaces of built up areas are impermeable, New homes have also been built of floodpains increasing flood risk both in the built up areas and further downstream
DEFORESTATION
-
Lowered intercepton rates, increasing Surface Runoff
Roots of trees help to keep soil loose, Increasing infiltration // Without them soil becomes more compact increasing surface runoff as infiltration is limited
FARMING
Soil has become more compact due to trampling and heavy machinery // Inflitration is much harder, Surfacre runoff increase
