Fractions and Decimals: Class V - Coggle Diagram
Fractions and Decimals: Class V
Objectives
Compare fractions with like and unlike denominators.
Order a set of three or more fractions on a number line.
Add and subtract fractions (like & unlike) and simplify results.
Comparing & Ordering
Using fraction bars
Comparing to 0, 1/2 and 1
. (e.g., 3/7 is less than half, 5/9 is more than half). So, 3/7 < 5/9.
Finding a Common Denominator
Example: Comparing 2/3 and 3/4 which is equal to 8/12 and 9/12. So, 3/4 > 2/3.
Prior Knowledge
Least Common Multiple (LCM)
Equivalent Fractions
Understanding that a larger denominator means smaller fractions.
Adding & Subtracting
Like Denominators
: Keep the denominator as it is, add/subtract the numerators. Examples: 6/8-3/8=3/8
Unlike Denominators:
Step 1: Find LCD. 2) Then add the fractions. Example: 4/5 and 5/10 whish is equal to 8/10 + 5/10 = 13/10
Same numerators: Understanding that a larger numerators means greater fractions. Example: 2/6 + 2/3= 6/6
Activities
Solve the following questions
1) Add the following fractions using any methods a) 2/8 + 5/8 b) 3/4 + 2/6 c) 1/4 + 1/2
2)Subtract the following fractions using any methods
a) 5/9 - 1/9 b) 4/5 - 1/2
Activities
Solve the following questions 1) Compare these fractions(3/7, 4/5, 1/2) using fraction bars. 2) Compare these fractions( 2/5 and 4/8) using any methods.
Follow up: Will let them exchange their book and do peer assessment.
Exit Ticket: They will share what they got from the lesson before leaving the class.
