Conditioning and Learning
What is Learning?
Definition: Relative permanent change in behavior due to experience
Characteristics
Alters behavior constantly through experience
Can be a reflexive or responsive process
Incidental Learning: Occurs without conscious awareness
Two Primary Pillars of Learning
Classical Conditioning (Pavlov)
Focus: About stimulus and response (involuntary associations)
Operant Conditioning (Skinner)
Focus: About rewards and punishments (voluntary behaviors)
Classical (Pavlovian) Conditioning
Core Concept: An organism learns a new association between two stimuli
The 4 Structural Components
Unconditioned Stimulus (US)
Definition: Trigger that naturally/automatically elicits a response without prior learning
Unconditioned Response (UR)
Definition: Unlearned, natural reflexive reaction to the US
Conditioned Stimulus (CS)
Definition: A previously neutral stimulus that, after pairing with the US, triggers a response
Conditioned Response (CR)
Definition: The learned response to the previously neutral stimulus (CS)
Advanced Learning Phenomenons
Extinction
Definition: Weakening and eventual disappearance of the CR
Cause: Repeatedly presenting the CS
without
the US
Blocking
Definition: A prior association prevents the learning of a new association
Mechanism: If an existing cue already perfectly predicts an outcome, a new cue added alongside it is ignored
